20th Annual Gateway All American 17U boys tournament

I was curious about the team ratings in the Gateway tournament 17U division this past weekend for several reasons:
  1. First, Gateway 16U played up in the tournament and I have a good rating basis for them from the Prep Hoops and Spring Tune-up tournaments earlier this year.  
  2. Secondly, my grandson's Larry Hughes 16U squad also plays up, from time to time, so it is nice to  know the strength of the 17U teams in the area.  
  3. Thirdly, the Gateway 15U team played up in the 16U tournament and I am always curious about how much a team improves in rating from year to year.  I had sort of gauged that the difference between 15U, 16U and 17U teams were about 8-10 rating points per year, so this tournament gave me a chance to look at Gateway's teams to test that theory. 
The 17U tournament was an interesting contest to run through a ratings algorithm since Gateway 17U is a top ranked team and played that way until the final, where they shot horribly and lost by 16 to the Marcus Denmon Elite.  The Gateway 16U team actual stayed much closer to the Denmon team, losing by 8.  No one would say the Gateway 16U team is 8 points better than their 17U team, but that is what I am sometimes faced with in calculating ratings.  One bad game can throw an algorithm awry.  I have to sometimes over-weight some games and under-weight others, especially when they are big blow-outs.  I have seen a team get beat by 50 points in a bracket and come back and nearly beat the same opponent in the championship round.  Go figure.  They are 16 and 17 year olds.  

So, to answer question 3, the Gateway 15U team rated 105 in the 16U tournament round and the Gateway 16U and 17U teams were 114 and 126, respectively.  So, yes, Virginia, a year of maturity is worth about 10 rating points and there is a Santa Claus.

JULY 14U/8th Grade USA Rankings

I have updated my 14U/8th grade rankings prior to some big tournaments coming up.  The top 25 are all rock solid teams and any one of them could win any of the upcoming tournaments.  I am not going to differentiate the 14U and 8th grade ratings because that would take a whole lot of work to investigate all of the teams that might have 15 or 16 year olds playing on an 8th grade team because they have been held back for academic or other reasons. The Larry Hughes Basketball Academy Select team coached by Eric Bain (my grandson plays for him) is my anchor to these ratings at 100 (now ranked 249).  I have tried to list teams by state but some may be associated with the tournament state that they played in.
