Big Foot Hoops Las Vegas Classic July 24-28h 16U ratings
I have been wanting to post the ratings for the Big Foot Hoops Las Vegas Classic which ended a week ago but hit a couple of snags along the way. The Knights Basketball Academy of St. Louis finished as the runner-up in the Silver Division Consolation Championship game, losing to the Play Hard, Play Smart squad from California by 10. So, hat's off to the Knights for finishing off the year with a strong run out in Vegas.
There a number of key things to take away from this particular blog, so please keep reading. There is a new guy in the top 10, the tournament is really complex and there are as many really, really bad teams competing as there are really, really great teams.
Let's start with Select Basketball Red, out in the Northwest (Montana, Idaho, Oregon). I have rated them at 133.7. That would put them at #6 on my national chart, right behind DC premier. I will update the national rankings sometime this week. I don't believe I have seen them on anyone's radar.
It took me a while to rate this tournament because of the complexity and the number of unknown teams. As you know, I compare teams scores using an algorithm to get a comparative rating. The more teams that are unknown, the more blanks I have to fill in. It's like a Sudoku. The fewer clues you get, the tougher the puzzle. I had results for the Knights and about one third of the teams. I had to develop ratings through the brackets and the championship brackets to fill in team ratings, a little at a time, until I could rate all teams. Viola`! Sudoku complete. I usually don't get a tournament like that at the end of the season. These unknowns are usually at the beginning of the season.
The tournament was a mixed bag. The top ten team rating was 122 which is really great but the average for the tournament was 94, which is sub-par. That means that a whole lot of teams came out to Vegas because the parents wanted to party, not because the kids wanted to showcase their talents. LOL. Well, maybe not. There were a lot of 50 point losses (what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas).
So if you want a really competitive tournament, the Las Vegas Classic might not be your cup of tea. If you want to roll over a bunch of patsies for the first two days and then buckle down, then come out the Big Foot Hoops next year.
Here are the ratings. Congrats to Select Red. New kid on the block.
